The L. Thomas Wolff, M.D. Scholarship is an annual competitive award granted to a deserving student who has completed at least one AHEC program and is enrolling in a medical or health professions program next semester. The recipient of this prestigious scholarship embodies Dr. Wolff’s indomitable spirit, integrity, and dedication to serving those most in need of care. 

A Family Man and Healthcare Pioneer

Dr. Wolff’s profound dedication to the well-being of families throughout central New York resonates throughout his illustrious career. He has been an active presence at local, state, and national levels, serving on and chairing numerous professional organizations and boards. A co-founder of the New York State Area Health Education Center (AHEC) System and Associate Director from 1998 until 2005, Dr. Wolff’s contributions have left an indelible mark on healthcare education and accessibility. 

A Journey of Excellence

Dr. Wolff’s journey of excellence began with an undergraduate degree from Siena College and continued to Albany Medical College, where he earned his medical degree. His passion for family medicine and a commitment to improving healthcare led him to complete his residency at St. Joseph’s Hospital and serve in the Army Medical Corps as a Family Practice and Ambulatory Care Consultant to the Surgeon General. Notably, he played a pivotal role in implementing seven Family Practice Residency Programs within the U.S. Army system. His dedication to medical education extended to the role of Director of Medical Education at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, while he simultaneously contributed to the faculty at SUNY Upstate Medical University College of Medicine as Chair of the Department of Family Medicine.
